ROOCO LIMITED CEASES OPERATIONS
January 28, 2020
Calgary, Alberta: Rooco Limited ("Rooco" or the "Company") announces that the Company has ceased substantially all operations, and has begun providing notices to customers of the termination of the Company's services (the "Termination Notices").
The cessation of the Company's business comes as a result of recent changes to accepted rules and practices made by the Alberta Provincial Courts (Traffic Division) (the "Traffic Courts") and the Crown prosecutors in Edmonton. In October 2019, Crown prosecutors implemented a major change to historical practices, by forgoing first appearances and the reduction on photo-radar tickets and instead setting these matters down for trial. More recently, the Traffic Courts have refused to allow Rooco to appear as agent for individuals, despite the provisions of the Provincial Court Act that permit Rooco to do so.
Although Rooco has complied with all rules, policies and procedures of the Traffic Courts, the changes instituted have resulted in the Company being ineligible to represent its customers at trial as an authorized agent. The Company has made efforts to communicate with the Alberta Provincial Court and the Crown to understand the reasons behind the changes, however these efforts have been unsuccessful and the urgent implications for its customers has led to the cessation of operations.
"Unfortunately, the unexpected and unexplained changes to the policies of the Traffic Courts and the Crown in Edmonton have made it impossible for the Company to continue with our operations," said Andrew, Chief Executive Officer of the Company. "I believe we have done everything we could to resolve this situation and regret that we are unable to continue to provide support to our over 5,000 satisfied customers in Alberta."
The Company has begun sending Termination Notices to customers with imminent Traffic Court appearance dates, and expects all Termination Notices will be disseminated in the coming days.
